My Top Ten predictions for the gift market in 2015

As many of us are preparing to visit the Spring Fair next week I think we will see the following trends on gifts this year... see what you think

  1. Gifts need to be functional and useful, gorgeous is not enough.
  2. Homewares fit this perfectly and ceramic, paper and other materials that take detailed design well will top this list.
  3. Throws, cushions and other big statement pieces will be much in evidence.
  4. Ladies scarves and accessories will continue to be a top selling category.
  5. Personalisation will continue to be the ultimate sign of a thoughtful gift but this is no longer the domain of lower priced gifts from Moonpig and Funky Pigeon and smaller UK manufacturers are well placed to support this business.
  6. Licensing of card designs will fuel the design direction on gifts for 2015-2016.
  7. Caroline Gardner’s diversification into ladies accessories and homewares will make her products and designs even more desirable, will Caroline become the new Orla Kiely?
  8. Customers will shop as and when they need something rather than going out to shop once a month so retailers need to launch smaller, new ranges more regularly.
  9. Updating displays and changing window displays will be more critical than ever.
  10. Design-led stationery will become a rising retail star as designers and card publishers want to diversify and more manufacturing capability becoming available in the UK.
