What's HOT in stationery: Foil, Colour, Fashion

Welcome to my first in a series of blogs on stationery, ahead of Stationery Week (25 April - 1 May 2016)…

Whichever industry publication you read there will almost certainly be headlines about how tough retail is and without a doubt it is certainly challenging but I think 2016 looks like it could be a good year for the sector as there is a significant amount of innovation in the market at the moment which is really exciting.

We are seeing strong influences coming from other market sectors; colours from interiors and fashion and a lot of design ideas coming from the greeting card market as more and more card publishers start to license their designs to manufacturers in allied areas including creative stationery. The great thing about card publishers is they understand how to push the boundaries with print techniques, finishes, and boards so the ideas they produce are innovative and exciting and when these are passed on to other sectors we all benefit.

Looking around the shows foil seems to be the material of the moment with the most wonderful colours available from soft pastels, through to brights and iridescents this teamed with subtle tonal washes was giving some wonderful effects soft but eye-catching and the stationery pictured here from card publisher Raspberry Blossom is a good example of this.

As we move towards the summer, the one thing we can be absolutely certain of this year is the influence of the Rio Olympics on our colour palette with bright electric pinks, yellows and greens and the vibrant imagery of the tropics including flamingos, pineapples, cacti and cocktail glasses…

This is a great excuse for a party over the summer and gives a wonderful opportunity for retailers to theme shop windows and instore displays… let’s hope it is a hot summer!
